About Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie

Two forts guard the mouth of Charleston Harbor. Patriots in the palmetto-log fort later named Fort Moultrie beat the Royal Navy in 1776, and the Confederacy's attack on the U.S. garrison at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861 opened the Civil War; Sumter is reached only by ferry from Liberty Square in Charleston or Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant.
