What This Page Is For
Use it to: plan a fall-color trip around elevation, not the calendar: find your destination, read its usual peak window and pick a weekend. From early October, check South Carolina State Parks' fall foliage reports for what the color is doing now.
Where the figures come from: map points from OpenStreetMap; ground elevations from the USGS Elevation Point Query Service, read on October 26, 2026. Timing comes from South Carolina State Parks, Discover South Carolina and Clemson University forest ecologists, quoted below.
Not confirmed: no official source publishes a peak window for each elevation band in South Carolina. The windows in this table are our model, built from Clemson’s rule that color moves downhill about 1,000 feet a week from early October above 5,000 feet. They agree with the state’s statewide timing, but they are not a sourced date for any one place.

What The Sources Say
- “While peak leaf season is typically closer to the end of October, there are fall colors from the beginning of October usually until Thanksgiving.” South Carolina State Parks
- “Typically, the peak fall foliage season in South Carolina occurs between mid-October and early November.” South Carolina State Parks
- “Begin your adventures in the mountains in mid to late October and work your way down towards the coast in November.” South Carolina State Parks
- “Mother Nature’s dazzling display of color typically peaks around the last week of October to early November in higher elevations like the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area.” Discover South Carolina
- “Higher elevations—above 5,000 feet—are expected to peak in early October. For every 1,000 feet decrease in elevation, peak color will occur roughly a week later. Areas in the Upstate should see their most vivid displays around the first part of November.” Clemson University
- “What you’re going to see is that peak fall color spilling down the hill at a rate of about 1,000 feet a week as we continue through the fall, probably hitting fall color around the Upstate of South Carolina right there around early November” Clemson University
- “Especially this year if it’s delayed a little bit, oftentimes it could be that first week of November maybe into about Nov. 10, we could see some really good fall color in the Upstate” Clemson University
- “The first couple of weeks of October, maybe even the third week, should be really nice up at these higher elevations.” Clemson University
- “But for fall color in the Upstate — along S.C. Highway 11 and near Lake Jocassee — realistically you’re looking at early November before you see your best colors there.” Clemson University
- “For those trying to plan their fall foliage viewing trip for this season, a good rule of thumb is that fall color moves downhill at about 1,000 feet per week once fall arrives, when cooler weather and shorter days start to commence.” Clemson University
- “Leaf color changes are expected to peak in early-to-mid October in North Carolina and in early November in South Carolina.” Clemson University
- “This elevation is where you see the fall color happening first, and you’re going to see that change, that wave of color kind of working its way down the mountain, down in elevation as you move into fall.” Clemson University
What Shifts The Timing
- The map point is not the overlook. Elevations are measured at each place’s mapped point, which for a park is often low ground near the entrance: Table Rock reads 1,596 ft here while its granite dome is 3,100 ft, so the summit trail colors earlier than the table says.
- Weather: Clemson’s outlooks note that drought, warm nights and storms can delay or dull the season by a week or more.
- Coast: the Midlands and coast turn later still, into November, per South Carolina State Parks.
What We Could Not Confirm
Not confirmed: we looked for these on official pages and did not find them. Check with the town or operator before you rely on them.
- No official source gives a peak window for SC Upstate elevation bands individually (e.g. 3,000-3,500 ft, 2,000-3,000 ft, 1,000-2,000 ft, below 1,000 ft). Any band windows must be derived from the Clemson rule (~1 week later per 1,000 ft below ~5,000 ft, early October at >5,000 ft) and labeled as a model, not a sourced date.
- Sources disagree slightly on the typical Upstate peak: SC State Parks director 'typically closer to the end of October'; Discover SC 'last week of October to early November' for higher elevations; SC State Parks 'mid-October and early November' statewide; Clemson outlooks (2022-2025) 'early November' / 'first part of November' for the Upstate.
- Clemson statements are season outlooks for specific years (2022, 2023, 2024, 2025), not multi-year climatologies. No 2026 Clemson outlook was found.
- No fall-color timing statement found on SC Forestry Commission (trees.sc.gov), USFS Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests pages, or NPS pages for the SC Upstate.
- SC State Parks pages ('fall-pumpkins-memories', 'looking-forward-to-fall') and Discover SC '7 great spots' show no publish date on the page.
- Caesars Head official elevation conflicts on Discover SC (3,266 ft vs 2,266 ft); not recorded.
- Official elevations were found only for Sassafras Mountain (3,553 ft) and Table Rock summit dome (3,100 ft). All other elevations are USGS EPQS at the OSM point only; for parks the OSM point is often a polygon centroid and can be far below the overlook/summit (Caesars Head, Table Rock, Bald Rock, Jones Gap).
- Pretty Place (YMCA Camp Greenville) is private camp property; access/hours not verified.
FAQ
When is peak fall color in South Carolina?
Typically between mid-October and early November, starting in the mountains and working toward the coast, according to South Carolina State Parks. Clemson’s forest ecologists put the Upstate’s best color around early November.
Where are the best fall colors in South Carolina?
The highest ground in the Upstate: Sassafras Mountain, Pretty Place (Fred W. Symmes Chapel), Jocassee Gorges (Wigington Scenic Byway overlook), Raven Cliff Falls, Jumping Off Rock. Higher places peak first.
Is this a fall foliage forecast?
No. It is a typical-year window by elevation. For this year, read South Carolina State Parks’ in-season fall foliage reports.
How much does elevation change the timing?
About a week per 1,000 feet, per Clemson University: color starts on the highest summits and moves downhill.
