Answers › Drive Across South Carolina

Driving the length of I-26, South Carolina's longest interstate (220.9 miles, FHWA), takes at least 3 hours 9 minutes at the 70 mph limit, and I-95 (198.76 miles) at least 2 hours 50 minutes. The longest corner-to-corner line we measured, Walhalla to Myrtle Beach, is 249 miles straight line, and roads add to that. Those times are our arithmetic at the limit with no stops or traffic, not a route planner.

What We Could Not Confirm

Not confirmed: we looked for these on official pages and did not find them. Check with the town or operator before you rely on them.

  • Drive times across the state: no official source states hours to cross South Carolina; do not compute one from miles and speed limit.
  • State width (east-west) and north-south length: not stated on the Census state-area page or the USGS Elevations and Distances page (USGS gives only an approximate geographic center).
  • NOAA Office for Coastal Management 'Shoreline Mileage of the United States' (coast.noaa.gov/data/docs/states/shorelines.pdf) general coastline and tidal shoreline figures for SC: PDF is encrypted and could not be read with available tools. A figure of 2,876 tidal shoreline miles appeared only in an unofficial summary; general coastline not seen. Not confirmed.
  • Sassafras Mountain elevation differs by source: SCDNR 3,553 ft (used), USGS booklet 3,560 ft (older survey), SC Encyclopedia 3,554 ft. Use SCDNR and note the difference if shown.
  • Census area figures come from the 2010 reference file; a newer Census area table was not checked.
  • Cross Island Parkway toll plaza removal completion: SCDOT 2021 release says the plaza would be removed 'in the coming months'; completion date not confirmed on a page.
